History of Digamadulla

Konduwatana reservoir was constructed by  blocking Moravil Aru. In 1936 Mr. J.F Kennedy who was the director of agriculture understood that the Inginiyagala is best place to construct a reservoir. Appointments of the project placed according to their talents and skills.
After the Gal oya scheme finished a big flood was happen  in 1957-1958. The water flew above 7 feet of the water fill. There was only 03 feet to out flow the water over the dam. Sciencetists believes such rain will happen  once 1000 years.


Later blocked the more water ways that is not interrelated with the Inginiyagala Senanayaka Samudra and constructed more water tanks, such as Namal Oya, Pallan oya, Himidurawa, Ali gal ge, Nawagiriyawa, Ambalan oya etc.
Gal oyavalley Development Board workers were donated unsuccessful lands of coconut. Now the village called Polwaga janapadaya(Polwatta).
Margin of the Rohana and the Rajarata was the Gal oya river. People believe that the Digamadulla was constructed by Prince Deegayu.
There is a famous hermitage called Buddangala.
House names are called by numbers, ex. Home no. 70.
There are annual religious festivals of Digavapi and the Buggangala royal temples.
First Janapada Viyaparaya(Development project) was Padaviya. According to the experiences the Galoya development was done.
Fish was banned for food at the very first days of the resettled people because the higher temperature of the area. The Gal oya development board provided a house, a memoty, ketta(Knife), Porowa, Yakada inna and the board plough the paddy fields for farmers. And the board distributed paddy seeds also.
Nearest hospital was Inginiyagala.

National parks
Kumana, Gal oya
Galha Nadi became as the Gal oya nadiya. According to the Mahawansa the Digamadulla was created by the prince Deegayu.
Historians calls Digamadulla with North dry flat lands as the Thotilla of the Sinhala great culture.
The Gal oya reach to the sea at Akkarapattu. The river flow for 108 Km distance. Specific animals are Haban kukula, Rathu mal koha.
There are 4 divisions in the Gal oya national park. They are Inginiyagala, Mullegama, Nilgala, Baduluwela.
This Gal  oya project was the first heavy vehicle used project in Sri Lanka. They cut the forest by using ship anchor chains which length is 220 feet.
The constructions were the Denvern international corporation of Colorado  in USA and it’s subsidiary of Morrisson Hudson Company.
The project started on March of 1949. Height of the dam is 145 feet. There is 30 feet road. Length of the dam is 3456 feet.

In a wedding ceremony the  bride’s party shoot to the sky first after arrival near to the brides house and the bridegrooms party also reply by shooting to the sky. Then the bride take to the bride grooms house by shooting to the sky.
Digavapi- Nail relic of Buddha stored.
Digavapiya means lengthy reservoir. Pattipal aru means Gala laga oya. Nikaweratiyaya was drowned to the Senanayaka samudra. There is a God called Nikaweratiye deviyo which is most believed. The gods full name is Nikaweratiye Passara Palawatta Nindagama Ellu Dissanayaka Aluth Bandara.
Most people used to call the co-operative society shop as “Samagam kade”.
People hang a branch of small tree leaves when entering to the forest for Pulleyar god.
